Barn Sales

Another successful season of barn sales has terminated. This year we were able to host 6 sales, helping to defray the expenses of heating the museum and enabling it to remain open year round. All items sold were donated to us by generous members of the community. Our appreciation goes to them and to the volunteers who unselfishly gave of their time.

NH Historic Marker

The Berlin & Coos County Historical Society successfully applied for and was granted a NH State Historic Marker for the location of the first permanent residence in what was then Maynesborough. This marker is located on the East Milan Road between the Brown Company barns, now owned by the Berlin & Coos County Historical Society. This first house was built by William Sessions in 1823 with the help of his young nephew, Cyrus Wheeler. 2010 is the 200th anniversary of the birth of Cyrus Wheeler who was born July 5, 1810 in Gilead, Maine.  The marker was dedicated on Saturday, May 29 with many descendants of the original builders in attendance. The Wheelers came from Pennsylvania and the Sessions came from the nearby Bethel, Maine area. Almost 80 people joined the celebration, including Boy Scouts who had helped to beautify the area between the barns. This is only the second state marker in Berlin; the other being on upper Main Street to showcase the Boom Piers, which are prominent in that area.

Boy Scout Eagle Project

The Berlin & Coos County Historical Society had the good fortune of having Turner Couture choose the area between the two Brown Company Barns for his Eagle Scout Project. Turner and fellow Boy Scouts with the help of a group of adult leaders and volunteers cleared the area of stones and brush, graded and seeded it, therefore enabling a mower to keep it groomed. He helped erect a wall around the new state historic marker, depicting the first permanent residence in Berlin. Turner completed the required one hundred hours for the badge. Thank you Turner and all those volunteers and Scouts who helped beautify the area.

Moffett House Museum & Genealogy Center Gets a Face Lift

In October of 2009 BCCHS received a grant in the amount of $23,246 from the Neil and Louise Tillotson Fund of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation to support capital improvements to the Moffett House Museum. In March 26 new Marvin replacement windows were installed. These windows were of wood frame construction with green aluminum cladding on the exterior; all windows were custom ordered to match the originals and also provide UV protection to help preserve the historical objects within the museum.

The second phase of this grant was the painting of the Moffett House exterior. BCCHS employed a contractor to paint three sides of the Museum and volunteers painted the fourth side as part of the match for the grant. An oil primer and an acrylic latex top coat give the museum a well needed fresh look to help preserve the Moffett House for years to come. The balance of the project cost came from a combination of cash and volunteer labor.
